For the Questions That Divide Us
Since 2025, the Stanford Political Review has worked to make room for civil political debate across ideologies and disciplines.
The Stanford Political Review (SPR) is a student-run, independent journal dedicated to fostering dynamic, collaborative, and diverse political discourse across campus. Established in 2025, the SPR remains nonpartisan and unaffiliated with any political party.
Editors, writers, photographers, and all contributors to the journal adhere to agreed-upon journalistic standards set forth by the editors of SPR. Content featured by the SPR is derived primarily from the Stanford community, though outside submissions are thoughtfully considered.
The founders envisioned a platform that provided Stanford students the opportunity to become civically engaged, politically knowledgeable, and part of a community devoted to representing a diversity of ideologies. SPR strives to live up to its founding values, as described below.
Our Founding Values
We, the students of Stanford University, bound by a common commitment to civic engagement through a shared responsibility of inquiry, in order to instill a culture of purposeful discourse, facilitate intellectual vibrance on campus and beyond, safeguard the independence of our voice, and uphold the integrity of our organization, do consecrate this constitution for the Stanford Political Review.
“A common commitment to civic engagement”
SPR was founded because a noticeable gap in campus discourse emerged: there was no multipartisan platform to share a wide variety of political thought. Engaging civically extends beyond casting a ballot. At SPR, it looks like working across differences, standing up for your beliefs and values in a respectful manner, and striving to create a culture of productive discourse through different mediums.

SPR prides itself on the diversity of angles students and contributing writers provide to the conversation. That said, we call on those who engage with us to come with an open mind and an enthusiasm for better understanding a political idea. We are constantly learning from one another and growing together. This is the attitude we are determined to uphold.
“A culture of purposeful discourse”
SPR publishes most works to ensure that we leave no side of the story unheard. At the same time, we demand respectful writing that contributes a unique and productive piece of the puzzle for our readers. We also demand that subsequent engagement in published pieces is respectful and productive. We honor the ideal of freedom of speech, and therefore believe that building a culture around civil disagreement is essential to upholding it — not an infringement upon it. “Facilitate intellectual vibrance on campus and beyond”
SPR’s work aspires to extend beyond prose. We aim to be a point of moderation of civil discourse and demonstrate the diversity of values across Stanford and communities beyond. Our categories are broad purposefully to encapsulate as many intellectual contributions as possible, as we understand politics can permeate all layers of society. Founded as the only multipartisan student political journal on campus, we will do our best to showcase all levels of thoughtful writing ability and to help facilitate programming across other organizations.
“Safeguard the independence of our voice”
SPR was founded on the principle of providing a platform for the vulnerable, safe from influence and exposure. Our founding came during an era of federal intimidation for communities to feel that they risked harm if they attached their name to something they believed in. Due to our anonymity policy and efforts to protect the freedom of speech from intimidation tactics, our priority is to ensure that every independent voice shines and is safe from harm.
“Uphold the integrity of our organization”
SPR understands that establishing trust in its readership is the highest priority. Our name must hold an ethos of quality and accuracy that our audience and team can look towards as a beacon of intellectual truth. This is a constant and important goal that we will forever intend to reach and maintain.
